common eye conditions

There are a number of common conditions (as well as many rare conditions) that may be found during an eye examination.

The most common are glaucoma, cataract and muculopathy.

Glaucoma is the name for a variety of conditions which usually involve an increase in the fluid pressure inside the eye which can result in changes to the nerves of the retina. In extreme cases blindness is the result but usually if caught early it can be treated very successfuly.

Cataract is the name to the clouding of the lens inside the eye. It is usually associated with age although there can be other causes. Treatment is surgical when visual performance is significantly reduced. Spectacles can help significantly but they may need to be changed more often.

Maculopathy is the name given to a number of conditions in which the central vision is reduced or lost. Diet and inappropriate light attenuation may influence development. It is very important that professional advice is taken early as it may be critical in providing good vision in the future.
